Recent Announcements

  • The Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) and Smarter Balanced are recruiting qualified educators to support the following assessment activities in 2021:

    • English/Language Arts Item Review for Content, Fairness, and Accessibility
    • Mathematics Item Review for Content, Fairness, and Accessibility
    • English/Language Arts Passage Review
    • Mathematics Achievement Level Descriptors Review

    Applications are due by May 3, 2021.  The meetings will be held virtually.  Participants will receive training and relevant digital materials prior to meeting. The meetings are expected to occur on Zoom and accessibility accommodations will be available for participants who need them. 

    More information including eligibility, logistics, reimbursement, and dates are available on our web site. Educators selected to participate will be contacted directly by Smarter Balanced.

  • Mac OS Hardware Support Update for Secure Browser

    CAI has released a new version of the Secure Browser that supports MacOS 10.16, including those computers equipped with the M1 processor. This new version 12.6 of the Secure Browser is only for those MacOS computers that are utilizing operating version 10.16. If your operating system is at MacOS 10.15 or below, no action is required at this time and you should continue to use version 12.5 of the Secure Browser.

    For instructions and to download the new version, please navigate to the Secure Browser Installation card link to the right and scroll down and click on the MacOS 10.16 Secure Browser tab.

  • Smarter Balanced is currently recruiting educators for the State Network of Educators (SNE) summer virtual workshops being held on June 14-18 and July 12-16, 2021.  More information is available on the Smarter Balanced web site. Educators who meet the qualifications listed below can indicate their interest by submitting a RSVP to Smarter Balanced. Those educators who are selected will be contacted directly by Smarter Balanced.  Please contact Michelle Rosado at if you have any questions.

    Educators should meet the following qualifications:

    1. Currently certified or licensed in ELA/literacy, mathematics, English learners, or students with disabilities.
    2. Currently teaching in, or employed by, a public school, district, or state education entity, including higher education
    3. Currently (or within the past three years):
    • Teaching ELA/literacy or mathematics in grades 3 through 8 or working in a classroom content support role such as a literacy or district or state content specialist;
    •  Teaching students with disabilities or English learners, in grades 3 through 8 or working in a support role such as a district/school coordinator or instructional specialist; OR
    • Working in a classroom content support role such as a literacy or mathematics coach/coordinator or instructional specialist.

  • The Connecticut Alternate Assessment System Training – Required for Teachers Administering the Alternate (TEAs) for the 2020-2021 school year is now available! The training course link, along with all other relevant training resources, can be found here: This course is annually required for any educator responsible for administering any alternate assessment. 

    The CSDE Assessment Guidelines for 2020-21 is also now available on the portal. This document provides guidance about testing special student populations on Connecticut statewide assessments.
