2022-23 Connecticut Alternate Assessment System Training for TEAs Now Available!

The 2022-23 Connecticut Alternate Assessment System Training for Teachers Administering the Alternate

is Now Available!

The required, online Connecticut Alternate Assessment System Training is now available on the Connecticut Comprehensive Assessment Program Portal for teachers who have the primary responsibility for assessing students in Grades 3 – 8 and 11 on the Connecticut Alternate Assessment System that includes:

  • Connecticut Alternate Assessments (CTAA) for Math and ELA (Grades 3-8 and 11)
  • Connecticut Alternate Science (CTAS) Assessment (Grades 5, 8, and 11)

The Collaborative for the Alternate Assessment of English Language Proficiency (CAAELP) is now included in the Connecticut Alternate Assessment System. This language assessment is designed for eligible students in Grades K-12 identified as English learners/multilingual learners with the most significant cognitive disabilities. Information about this required separate training will be forthcoming before the CAAELP testing window which is February 1-March 31, 2023.

Teachers administering any alternate assessment must have a TIDE Teacher Administering the Alternate (TEA) account to access these assessments.

There are four training sessions that include topics related to student eligibility, the requirements and responsibilities of the TEA, an overview of the CTAA and CTAS, optimal testing conditions, test administration procedures, and other related content. An audio recording, closed captioning, and transcripts are available for each session. Sessions can be accessed as many times as needed. Additionally, ancillary materials are available under the Resource Type “Training” filter on the Resources area on the Assessment Program Portal page and includes a Master List of Session Tasks, PDFs with notes for each training module, and Responsibility Checklists for the CTAA and CTAS.

It is highly recommended that training be completed in the fall/mid-December 2022 to meet the deadlines for submitting the Connecticut Alternate Assessment System Eligibility Form into the Data Entry Interface. Additionally, training should occur early in the school year so that TEAs are prepared to administer the CTAS to students in Grades 5, 8, and 11. This assessment consists of paper-based performance tasks and should be administered throughout the school year.

Reminders for TEAs:

  • Confirm you have been assigned the user role of TEA by your District Administrator (DA) in TIDE.
  • Verify that you can access the TIDE system with your username and established password.
  • Following the completion of the four training sessions, take and pass the quiz with a score of 80% or greater, which will activate your trained status in TIDE. Download and save the Certificate of Completion for your records.
  • Confirm that your trained status is activated to YES in your TIDE user profile.

Submission Phases





November 14, 2022 – December 23, 2022

Eligibility forms must be submitted into the DEI between November 14 – December 23, 2022, for the following students:

  • Students in Grade 11 who qualify for the Alternate Assessment System;


  • Students in Grades K-12 who are dually identified as an English learner/ multilingual learner (EL/ML) and receive services under IDEA who qualify for the CAAELP and/or CTAA/CTAS.




November 14, 2022 – March 1, 2023

  • Students in Grades 3-8 who qualify for the Alternate Assessment System;


  • Any new student in Grade 11 or a newly identified EL/ML who qualifies for the CAAELP and/or CTAA/CTAS.

*Late submissions will only be permitted for those students newly identified for eligibility. In this case, submissions after March 1, 2023, will require the TEA to contact the Connecticut Cambium Assessment Incorporated Help Desk at 844-202-7583 to activate the Alt Flag Indicator. If this does not occur, students will only have access to the standard assessments (Smarter Balanced and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Assessments).































Once these steps are completed, TEAs will have the qualifications to submit Connecticut Alternate Assessment Eligibility Forms in the Data Entry Interface to register students to participate in the alternate assessment system, administer the Connecticut Alternate Assessments, and have access to related assessment systems that support test administration.
